27 February 2026

At Fife College, Fi Craig is now Head of School for Business, Digital & Creative, but her journey began on the salon floor as a Modern Apprentice. With a career spanning hands-on industry experience, further education and leadership, Fi’s story is a fantastic example of how vocational training can open doors to exciting and unexpected opportunities.

Can you tell us about your career journey and how your training or qualifications helped you get there?

I started my career in the 1990s as a Modern Apprentice in Hairdressing, achieving my SVQ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. While working in the salon and training apprentices, I completed my Assessor and Internal Verifier qualifications.

In 2001, I secured a lecturing role at Elmwood College in Cupar, which marked the beginning of my journey into Further Education. Since then, I have continued to progress professionally, undertaking further qualifications and development opportunities, which have led me to my current role at Fife College.

What inspired you to pursue a career in your sector, and did you always know this was the path for you?

The hairdressing industry is an exciting and rewarding sector to be part of. It offers so many opportunities for growth, creativity and development. Moving into Further Education gave me the chance to share my passion and enthusiasm with a wide range of learners, helping them build their own careers in the industry.

What challenges did you face along the way, and how did your learning or qualifications help you overcome them?

One of my biggest challenges was completing my degree in Business & Enterprise while working full-time and raising two young children. It was tough at times, but I’m incredibly proud that I persevered. Achieving my degree has enabled me to progress further in my career and step into leadership roles.

How has your career developed since completing your qualifications, and what opportunities do you see for others following the same path?

After completing my Modern Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, I went on to gain my Assessor, Internal Verifier and External Verifier qualifications. I also completed additional beauty therapy qualifications, including Indian Head Massage, Stone Therapy and Crystal Therapy, alongside my degree in Business & Enterprise.

Throughout my career, I have continued my professional development through seminars, workshops and ongoing salon work. The industry is constantly evolving, and there are always new skills to learn and new directions to explore.

There are so many opportunities within the sector — you never have to stop learning.
