Hairdressing

Jody Jones – Hairdressing Sector Expert

With a strong, industry-led background in hairdressing, Jody has worked as an apprentice, salon stylist, cruise and private-ship hairdresser, Level 2 and 3 assessor, and a technical educator for Wella Professionals.

Jody will support apprenticeship providers across the UK, using her broad experience to take a holistic view of the challenges they face and to help them achieve the best possible outcomes.

Adult Care

Mark Child – Adult Care Industry Expert

Mark Child is a multi-award-winning specialist in adult care, health and social care, and EDI.
He has held senior clinical and non-clinical roles across statutory and non-statutory services, with a particular focus on the therapeutic management of adults with complex and challenging behaviours.

With over 30 years’ experience in qualification design, assessment and quality assurance, Mark now works at VTCT Skills to strategically support colleges, training providers, trailblazer groups and government departments to shape and quality assure adult care, health and social care, and EDI qualifications and apprenticeship standards.

Business and Management

Nichola McTeague – Business and Management Sector Expert

Nichola is an experienced business and management specialist with a strong background in financial services and strategic account development.
Nichola joined Skillsfirst in 2010 gaining direct hands-on experience as she quickly established and led a multi-functional customer service operation spanning quality assurance, Functional Skills and external consultancy partnerships.

Having completed two apprenticeships and an assessor qualification, Nichola combines practical expertise with deep insight into provider and learner needs.

Logistics

Tamsyn Hammond – Logistics Sector Expert

With over 20 years in the education sector, working across government agencies and awarding bodies, Tamsyn has extensive expertise in apprenticeships, the Adult Education Budget, and the government funding landscape.

Tamsyn supports training providers and employers align apprenticeship delivery with funding opportunities and strategic workforce planning. As Head of New Business Development (Logistics) she supports providers and employers with expert guidance and sector insights. 

Early Years

Sandy Silvester – Early Years Industry Expert

Sandy is a seasoned early years specialist with over 30 years’ experience dedicated to improving outcomes for children through high-quality education and workforce development.
She has played a key role in implementing the Early Years Educator Standard, ensuring practitioners develop the skills and behaviours needed to give every child the best start in life.

Her background includes senior roles in training and quality assurance, supporting apprenticeship reform and delivering impactful CPD across the sector. Passionate about inclusion and SEND, Sandy works closely with providers to embed best practice and meet statutory expectations.

Early Years

The reformed Early Years Educator assessment plan has now been published for reference, although a confirmed implementation date is yet to be announced. We invite you to join our next Early Years Expert Reference Group on 14 January for the latest developments.

    While details vary by standard, most providers will experience changes such as:

    • Streamlined assessment – Less duplication, simpler evidence requirements, and clearer documentation.
    • Updated curriculum expectations – Some standards may have adjusted content or revised assessment models.
    • Faster Progression – Minimum duration of an apprenticeship has been reduced from 12 months to eight months, allowing those with prior experience or learning to achieve occupational competence more quickly.
    • Improved funding clarity – More consistent rules around eligible costs and employer contributions.
    • Flexibility in delivery – Enhanced options for blended learning, off-the-job training measurement, and employer involvement.
